Understanding Health Insurance

Health insurance is like a safety net for your health. It takes care of medical expenses for students, visitors, and individuals with various visas like work, business, skilled graduate, training, and temporary activity visas. If you’re coming to Australia from overseas, no matter what type of visa you have, you must have health insurance for your entire stay. Not having it can even lead to your visa being canceled, so it’s crucial to get it before you arrive.

Why Health Insurance Matters

With over Much students helped, we know how important health insurance is. You need to buy health insurance before coming to Australia because it’s a requirement set by the Department of Home Affairs. Health insurance ensures that unexpected medical costs during your stay are covered. This reduces the financial burden of medical treatments and makes your life in Australia hassle-free.

Types of Health Insurance

  1. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for international students: If you’re coming to Australia on a student visa (subclass 500), you can buy OSHC. It covers medical, hospital, emergency ambulance, and prescribed medicine costs. You must have OSHC for as long as your student visa is valid. If family members are coming with you on the same visa application, they also need health insurance.

  2. Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) for various visas: After graduating in Australia on a Temporary Graduate visa 485, you’ll need to switch to OVHC before your Overseas Student Health Cover expires. OVHC is required for immigrants and their dependent family members under certain visa categories, including Business Innovation & Investment Visa 188, Temporary Work Visa 482, and more.
